Research & Development Engineer (Aberdeenshire)

To support our work, we are looking to recruit an R&D Engineer. This position will be based at our site in Oldmeldrum, Aberdeenshire. The role will also have strong ties to our site in Gloucestershire.
As a R&D Engineer, the role will support a wide range of Steer projects. Previous projects include: developing “keyhole surgery” tools for remotely inspecting ageing assets; developing tooling to enable an emergency response to network damage; investigating methods and technologies for minimising the impact of street works on the public, ensuring that they are accessible for all (www.street-score.com); and examining technologies to manage ageing infrastructure in nuclear facilities.
You will also be delivering projects that contribute to the UK’s drive to net-zero by 2050. This includes assisting with the UK Governments’ long-term industrial and low carbon strategies, and supporting the Gas Network Operators (National Gas, SGN, Cadent, etc.) trial hydrogen use in practice.
The Role
The role requires working within a small but growing dynamic unit at Steer Energy to complete a range of varied projects. As part of this group, the successful candidate will be involved in all stages of our projects from conception to delivery, including planning, researching, and developing concepts, engineering and/or preparing and carrying out testing and qualification. The role will also require the candidate to support product approvals such as UKCA and other 3rd party processes.
Core Activities
The core activities for this role include:
- Supporting the successful delivery of technically complex projects
- Investigating and researching new technologies, processes and products
- Supporting the development and execution of challenging practical experiments, as well as analysing and developing a theoretical understanding of the results
- Designing, building, adapting and using experimental equipment and products both in the laboratory and in the field
- Supporting, and working with other team members to achieve project goals
- Providing written and oral reporting of results in both a formal and informal setting
- Field-trialing new products
- Contributing to the safe running of the workshop and labs
Candidate Requirements
- Mechanical Engineering degree (or similar) with cross-discipline experience
- Demonstrable experience in delivering the core activities mentioned above to a high standard
- Demonstrable experience in writing high-quality technical reports, risk assessments, method statements, and other customer-focused communications
- Have the ability to make the right decisions to facilitate rapid project progress often with little or conflicting data.
- Demonstrable experience in project management and leading multi-disciplinary teams
- Hands-on practical skills in manufacturing prototypes and setting up experimental equipment
- Strong numerical reasoning, written and verbal English skills
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, being able to communicate confidently at all levels in the company
- Demonstrable ownership of projects and products

Flexibility
For this role, Steer are open to discussions on how it may be delivered in a flexible manner. It is anticipated that this role could be delivered on a part-time basis (70-80% time). The primary workplace will be the Oldmeldrum site.
